Information regarding MEXT special exemption designation

Linden Hall School Junior and Senior High School division (established April 2010) was selected by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport as a specially-exempt school. This designation reflects the high value placed upon the school's immersion and environmental programs.

A MEXT-designated specially-exempt school is one that while remaining based on the curriculum mandated by the Ministry of Education has been permitted as required for the development of original educational content for specific goals to make adjustments to the national curriculum and is designated as having implemented them in a fully developed way.

Educational content of Environmental Studies

Using the English ability of our students that our being an immersion school makes possible as a means of communication, data related to environmental issues is collected in Japan and from around the world, analysed and ideas formulated to address such issues. We seek to foster in our students the ability to consider for themselves environmental issues and solutions , and to promulgate their ideas in media such as the internet.

Examples of actual activities

  • Find out how countries around the world are dealing with CO2 reduction, make comparisons with Japan, verify whether actual policies are being implemented, and come up with ideas as to what policies and directions can be taken to contribute to reductions.
  • Consider activities whereby forests can be protected to reduce CO2.
    1. Projects that advance the planting of trees.
    2. Projects to promote forest and support thinning of a forest.
    3. Projects to promote forest protection.(Participation in environmentally-oriented fund-raising)
    4. Verify of forestry projects in other countries
  • Conduct monitoring of acid rain 
    1. Make monthly charts showing rain acidity
    2. Research and consider the mechanisms causing acid rain
    3. Investigate worldwide distribution of acid rain, associated consequences and the verify underlying causes in different countries(industrial causes, other causes).
    4. Investigate actual damage resulting from acid rain and consider and debate how this might be reduced.
